A Tribute to the 1971 original AH novel by Robert Sobel

A Tribute to the 1971 original AH novel by Robert Sobel

Prologue: In my earliest stage of AH fanhood, one of the very first stories I uncovered on the internet was a story called 'For All Nails', which was itself, a continuation of the original written by Sobel.
Robert Sobel, a native of the Bronx, was originally an economics professor, but became interested in AH partly thanks to a former student of his, Jeff Weinper, who died in Vietnam. Originally a fun project to keep him occupied between books, 'For Want of a Nail' was a pioneer in its genre, creating, & utilizing the footnote style which has become so prevalent in Counterfactual stories today. It was first published in 1973, and while it was favorably reviewed, it was also relatively obscure, and, tragically failed to gain a lot of attention. It did, however, gain a cult following over the years, and interest in the book began to pique again in the 1990s. In 2000, Dan McDonald, and several other fans of the original, started the aforementioned 'For All Nails' project, intended to continue the timeline all the way up to the 21st century.
This particular project, however, is far larger in scope: It is essentially, as can be deduced from the name of the title, a remake of this long-time favorite. The main question I've always asked was: “What if the C.N.A., and the U.S. of Mexico, were switched?”. And, so, with a couple of years of planning, speculating, and restarting from scratch a few times, I've finally been able to put everything into writing.
At this time, my goal is to carry this TL to at least 1992, from the starting point of 1777. I have decided to slightly alter the POD to make things a little more original: the ATL First Battle of Saratoga has been moved back a little bit. What happens after that will be revealed in the posts to come. ...I do hope you will enjoy this, as much as I have had writing it.
