Well, it was Harry Turtledove that got me into AltHist. I got hooked on his Southern Victory series. In fact, thanks to him (and the fact that I was born and raised in Louisiana), a CSA victory is one of my favorite alternate timelines to write about. In addition to that series, I'd recommend In The Presence of Mine Enemies, Guns Of The South, and his Atlantis series. I'm not really interested in the stuff he's putting out now.
Though these would probably be considered military fiction rather than AltHist, but I'd also recommend Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy (dealing with a third world war in the 80's), and Red Phoenix by Larry Bond (dealing with a fictional second Korean War).

For me it's a dead heat between Turtledove's "American Empire/Great War" series, Robert Conroy's "1901", Robert Harris' "Fatherland", and Brendan DuBois' "Resurrection Day" in the literary category; in the TV/movies category my personal favorite is the documentary DVD "Hitler's Britain".

I've got several myself, but I'll start with Harry Turtledove's "Southern Victory" series, and Sobel's For Want of a Nail.
However, though, I'd also like to give a shout-out to Dave Johnson, and his "Trolley World" timeline: if anybody got me permanently hooked on AH as a subject, it was him. "Trolley World" was not only one of the first web-based AH projects, it was also fairly unique in many ways; I don't think many independent California stories existed before that one!

Not Harry Turtledove for me who was the first AH author who books i began to read but a very unknown author who wrote one book, translated in my native called Bommen op New York (Englsih: bombs on New York) or what it was called Lightning in the night by Fred Allhof who book i found at my very small local library and who i read so much that one day the Liberian gave it to me as a birth day gift.
My top 10 Alternate history books that i own are:
1: Lightning in the night by Fred Allhoff.
2: Great Pacific War: A History of the American-Japanese Campaign of 1931-33 by Hector Bywater.
3: The Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove.
4:1632 (Ring of Fire) by Eric Flint.
5: 1945:A Novel by Robert Conroy.
6: Fox on the Rhine and the Fox at the Front series by Douglas Niles and Michael Dobson.
7: MacArthur's War: A Novel of the Invasion by Douglas Niles and Michael Dobson.
8: Weapons of Choice: World War 2.1, Designated Targets: World War 2.2 and Designated Targets: World War 2.2 of the Axis of Time series by John Birmingham.
9: Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy.
10: The Big One by Stuart Slade.

Definitely liked The Guns of the South myself-ASB, but fairly decently written over all. Also, another person who introduced me to AH early was Tony Jones, whose website you can visit here: www.clockworksky.net/

My all-time favorite is Robert Sobel's For Want of a Nail. So much detail, and so easy to get lost in such a world.
